We Are… Board Certified

Before an individual can call themselves a music therapist, there is a series of steps that needs to be completed (and in the following order)! Complete a bachelor’s degree or higher in music therapy from one of over 70 American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved college and university programs. Complete 1200 hours of clinical training, including a supervised internship. Sit for the national board certification exam to obtain the credential MT-BC (Music Therapist – Board Certified) granted by the Certification Board for Music Therapists Maintain the title of MT-BC by completing 100 hours of continuing education courses every 5 years. (Which is where services like musictherapyed.com come into play!)   Something to note: CBMT maintains a registry of all active music therapists in the US.  If you are questioning the credentials of an individual music therapist you can always search for a therapist or contact CBMT with your questions or concerns. Some individuals may carry alternative credentials that predate the establishment of the CBMT.  Music therapists who currently hold the professional designations of ACMT, CMT or RMT are listed on Read More

Music Therapy Social Media Advocacy Month!

I am so excited to be a part of this Music Therapy project.  For the past 4 years music therapists across the nations have been blogging, tweeting, facebooking, and using all sorts of social media to help advocate for music therapy!  This year our theme is “We are…” and will center on exploring and honoring the profession of music therapy as a distinct profession, unique from other professions and professionals with which we work. Throughout the month of January, music therapy bloggers and podcasters will be sharing their tips, thoughts, and ideas on advocacy, on being an advocate, and on being a music therapist. I will be working on a series called the ABC’s of Music Therapy and will present a new letter each day that highlights part of our profession.  However, before I kick off my series I would like to share a post from Dena Register, PhD, MT-BC. About the Author: Dr. Dena Register is the Regulatory Affairs Advisor for the Certification Board for Music Therapists and an Associate Professor of Music Therapy at the University of Kansas. Happy New Year! – 2013 year in review and a new set of goals.

When I started looking back at this past year, I thought it had flown way to quickly and that I hadn’t accomplished very much. Then I started making a list, a quick list of everything I had done, everywhere I had been, and all I had accomplished over the course of 2013. After making a simple mental list, I quickly began to realize just where that year had gone. Here are a couple of the highlights: Updating my office Presenting to the Lincoln, IL Rotary Club, the Council for Exceptional Children, and a large hospice company. Performing with a local band. Celebrating 1 year of being a music therapist Celebrating 1 year of business Was featured as the IAMT member spotlight Starting the On A Good Note website, blog, facebook, twitter, and personal LinkedIn Traveling all over the country Learning to record using Garage Band and releasing over a dozen songs Offering several FREE resources on the website throughout the year AND working on a couple new and exciting opportunities for the coming year!
